The Real Great Escape
November 1913 will see the release by Random House Australia of “The Real Great Escape” by Jacqueline Cook. Holzminden Camp in Germany was the location of the largest PoW escape of World War I. In July 1918, 29 officers escaped through a tunnel; ten of them evaded capture and made it back to Britain. The Trust has been pleased to make available photographs of several RFC/RNAS pilots among the internees, as illustrations for the book. These include 2nd Lieutenant J K Tullis (below left) and the senior officer, Lieutenant Colonel C E H Rathborne (below right), both of whom successfully escaped. High-resolution images of these and other items in the Collection are available, subject to terms and conditions.
