Looping the Loop
One hundred years ago, Gustav Hamel “looped the loop” with a passenger, for the first time in this country. It was also the first time on record that a lady had participated. The event made the news headlines, as proclaimed by the “Star” newspaper placard from the Royal Aero Club Collection (above). Gustav Hamel (below left) and B C Hucks had perfected the manoeuvre during the previous month, but this was the first of many occasions on which Hamel was to perform the loop with his regular passenger, Miss Trehawke Davies (below, right).
